Driving
So you want to drive to Los Cabos? If you are well prepared this can be the trip of a lifetime! Try to make the 22 hour + drive ill prepared and you will regret your choice to drive this 1000 mile, rugged expanse that is Baja California.
Once at the border you will need to attain a tourist card from a customs or immigration agent. Inform them of your travel plans and they will accommodate your needs. It is very important not to forgot your Mexico car insurance. There are a number of places where you can, and should, buy insurance prior to crossing the border. If you get into an accident while in Mexico and do not have insurance (U.S./Canadian Auto Isurance is not recognized in Mexico) you may have your vehicle impounded and wind up in jail!
Between the Border in Tijuana and Land's End, Cabo San Lucas, is a very windy route. Compared to U.S./Canadian standards these roads are very narrow. Most of the road down from San Diego/Tijuana is 2 lanes; 1 in each direction. There is no center divider and often times no painted line. Driving can be challenging as large trucks and buses will pass in the opposite direction.
Do not drive at night. Cows and other animals wander on the road during the day, and it is worse at night with the animals gathering on the roads after keeping the heat absorbed during the day.
